Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager of Occupational Health & Safety, the Occupational Health & Safety Coordinator plays a critical role in ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety legislation and Magellan’s safety management systems. This position directly collaborates with managers, supervisors, engineers, and union representatives to ensure that all facility processes and work activities are performed safely and in compliance with applicable regulations and standards.

 

Essential Responsibilities

  • Providing recommendations and guidance based on knowledge of federal/provincial occupational safety and health legislation/regulations, applicable codes, standards and guidelines.
  • Conduct safety orientations for employees, visitors, and contractors.
  • Facilitate incident investigations, reporting, corrective action follow-up, and liaison with regulatory authorities when required.
  • Maintain injury and illness statistics and safety performance metrics.
  • Conduct, and assist with, regular safety audits (compliance, program, and management system audits).
  • Identify, develop, and deliver on-site safety & health training, including respirator training, overhead crane, powered mobile equipment.
  • Develop and support fire prevention and emergency management plans.
  • Act as first aider and emergency responder, which include responding and collaborating with the on-site emergency response team.
  • Develop and maintain safety documentation, including risk assessments, job hazard analysis, safe work procedures, emergency response plans and policies.
  • Implement corporate and divisional safety policies and initiatives.
  • Manage, coordinate, and be a resource for the Safety and Health Committee.
  • Support Environmental Management and Disability Management programs and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with union representatives and cross-functional teams (engineering, operations, maintenance) to meet safety objectives.
  • Identify and monitor safety-related issues and communicate findings to supervisors and management.

 

Position Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Safety & Health, Certificate/Diploma in Occupational Safety & Health
  • Minimum of two (2) years of relevant occupational health & safety experience.
  • Standard First Aid & CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of federal/provincial occupational safety and health legislation/regulations, applicable standards and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices including: WHMIS, chemical handling/storage, confined space entry, contractor safety, fall protection, hearing conservation (noise) and machine guarding.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, analytical, time management, and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently within a group/team environment.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office and Excel.
