Position Summary

 

Magellan Aerospace, Middletown, Inc. has an exciting opportunity for a Development Lab Specialist.  As a key member of our manufacturing team, the successful incumbent will contribute to the development of process procedures; evaluate equipment; evaluate tooling; train personnel; perform process improvement; and run specialized equipment.

 

Essential Responsibilities

 

  • Develops processes and prototypes for programs.
  • Trains personnel in the processes and methods developed in producing parts, at training rate.
  • Troubleshoots activities associated with programs for development of solutions to problems.
  • Collects all chemicals from process lines for testing in the lab.
  • Operates filament winder.
  • Performs specialized processes as assigned.
  • Develops and fabricates special projects and determines the feasibility of producing parts.
  • Fabricates test coupons with associated Tooling.
  • Develops procedures and methods for engineering changes and redesigned parts. 
  • Reads blueprints, schematic drawings, and receives verbal instructions from assigned supervisor regarding work assignment.
  • Operates autoclave.
  • Supports specialized tooling (i.e. reference panels) and mechanical testing that require special and specific procedures.
  • Work with Supervision or Engineers to document developed processes/procedures and/or edit written process/procedures.
  • Fabricates composite parts.
  • Basic housekeeping to clean up the area from the work performed and to maintain the housekeeping in the area using the proper conventional utensils (brooms, dusters, wet/dry rags, wet/dry vacuums), but excluding the use of mops and automatic floor scrubbers (i.e. Tennant floor scrubber). Maintaining the area includes material, parts, machines, tools and work tables used in manufacturing as well as objects used to store or stage items used in manufacturing.

Position Requirements

 

  • High School diploma (GED).
  • Must pass written test for the following topics: Blue Print Reading; Machining; Knowledge of metal and brazed honeycomb; Tack, seam, spot and TIG welding; Honing techniques; Use of Precision Measuring Equipment; Use of all types of mechanic's air hand tools; Operate filament winder; Operate autoclave; Brazing; Metal forming; Instrumentation; and Aerospace Assembly Techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Use of standard mechanics tools including all types of stationary or portable machines and equipment.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.  The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, and vibration.  The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme cold, extreme heat, and risk of electrical shock.  The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
